It has been 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story movie was released, establishing Pixar as a leading film company and introducing audiences to beloved figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans curious how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys

The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a latest plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is what Woody is back with his friends in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and assisting giveaway items find good homes.

Certainly, Pixar will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room without warning is a little strange, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The last thing Woody did before setting off for his new life was hand over his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her outfit.

It is hoped she is still the key figure among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
